Microsoft in Talks to Buy Facebook

Microsoft has been approaching Facebook in recent weeks with proposals to invest in the fast-growing site.According to report this is part of the Microsoft effort to catch up with the Internet rival Google. If successful, Microsoft’s talks with Facebook could give it an up-to-5% stake in the closely-held startup—a stake potentially valued at roughly $300 to $500 million.

Monks become spirit behind junta challenge

When 20,000 Buddhist monks, nuns and protesters marched through Rangoon’s streets, a 50-year-old housewife broke into tears as she rushed to the sidewalk to cheer them on.

She said they were tears of joy because, like many in the country ruled with an iron fist by the military, she sees the monks as Burma’s preeminent moral authority taking a stand on behalf of the people.

Crude Oil Falls a Second Day as Gulf of Mexico Output Increases

Crude oil fell for a second day as companies increased output at platforms in the Gulf of Mexico after a storm threat passed.

BP Plc, Royal Dutch Shell Plc and other oil companies sent workers back to the Gulf after a tropical depression made landfall without becoming a storm. Oil in New York rose to a record last week as employee evacuations curbed output in the region responsible for a quarter of U.S. output.

Iranian President begins US visit amid controversy

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has kicked off his third visit to the United States with two public appearances that have whipped up a storm of controversy and sparked angry protests.

The firebrand Iranian leader is to address the National Press Club in Washington by video conference and will later speak at Columbia University.

Bluetongue detected in Suffolk

The strain of Bluetongue virus detected in one cow near Ipswich, Suffolk has been identified as Serotype 8. This is the strain found in Belgium, France Germany, Luxembourg and Netherlands since August 2006.

This is not a confirmed outbreak unless further investigation demonstrates that disease is circulating, and this could take days or weeks to assess. The premises where Bluetongue was detected remains under restrictions, and epidemiological investigations are being carried out to assess the situation. Continue Reading

FBI investigates supremacist anti-’Jena 6′ Web site

The FBI is reviewing a white supremacist Web site that purports to list the addresses of five of the six black teenagers accused of beating a white student in Jena and “essentially called for their lynching,” an agency spokeswoman said Saturday.
