When 20,000 Buddhist monks, nuns and protesters marched through Rangoon’s streets, a 50-year-old housewife broke into tears as she rushed to the sidewalk to cheer them on.
She said they were tears of joy because, like many in the country ruled with an iron fist by the military, she sees the monks as Burma’s preeminent moral authority taking a stand on behalf of the people.

Crude oil fell for a second day as companies increased output at platforms in the Gulf of Mexico after a storm threat passed.
BP Plc, Royal Dutch Shell Plc and other oil companies sent workers back to the Gulf after a tropical depression made landfall without becoming a storm. Oil in New York rose to a record last week as employee evacuations curbed output in the region responsible for a quarter of U.S. output.

The strain of Bluetongue virus detected in one cow near Ipswich, Suffolk has been identified as Serotype 8. This is the strain found in Belgium, France Germany, Luxembourg and Netherlands since August 2006.
This is not a confirmed outbreak unless further investigation demonstrates that disease is circulating, and this could take days or weeks to assess.
