TorrentSpy ordered to pay $110 million in damages to MPAA

A California federal judge,U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper, has ordered TorrentSpy to pay some $110 million in damages for infringing the copyright of thousands of films and TV shows through its BitTorrent search engine.”This substantial money judgment sends a strong message about the illegality of these sites,The demise of TorrentSpy is a clear victory for the studios and demonstrates that such pirate sites will not be allowed to continue to operate without facing relentless litigation by copyright holders.”said Dan Glickman, Chairman and CEO of the MPAA.

Yahoo SearchScan

Yahoo is introducing a new technology to its search engine which will warn users if they are about to click on a website that hosts viruses, spyware and spam.The service, SearchScan uses security firm McAfee’s SiteAdvisor technology, is switched on by default, produces an on-screen alert.

Freesat launches in UK

Freesat,a free satellite television and radio service from the BBC and ITV is being launched across the UK.According to report it will carry 80 digital TV and radio channels, including free high definition programmes.Users will make a one-off payment for a dish, set-top box and installation, but will not pay a monthly subscription.

Sony BMG joins Nokia for free music offering

Nokia said Tuesday that it will offer free 12-month access to music from the world’s second biggest label, Sony BMG, to buyers of Nokia Music Phones.”We are quite confident that we will have all the labels at the table for Comes With Music. We are progressing in those negotiations,” said Liz Schimel, head of Nokia’s music business.

Google and Yahoo sharing web ads

The world’s two biggest search engines,Yahoo and Google,have announced a two-week experiment which will allow Google to place ads alongside 3% of search results on Yahoo’s website.Cowen and Co analyst Jim Friedland said to the BBC that “Microsoft had all the cards, Yahoo is at least now able to use this for leverage to get Microsoft to pay more.”

Lawsuit against Guitar Hero video games

Gibson Guitar said on Friday that the Guitar Hero video games violate a 1999 patent for technology to simulate a musical performance and therefore had filed a patent infringement lawsuit against MTV Networks and Harmonix, units of Viacom Inc., as well as Electronic Arts.

Safari 3.1 is here with HTML5 and CSS3

Apple has released a minor update to its Safari web browser, boosting performance and adding support for more of the web’s bleeding-edge features like HTML 5.Apple claims Safari web browser loads web pages 1.9 times faster than IE 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2 and also up to six times faster” than other browsers.Safari 3.1 now supports CSS animations, CSS web fonts, and HTML 5 media support, improved SVG support, and HTML 5’s offline storage support.
